{"id":664,"date":"2015-10-22T10:23:12","date_gmt":"2015-10-22T09:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bjanda.com\/blog\/?p=664"},"modified":"2015-10-22T10:23:12","modified_gmt":"2015-10-22T09:23:12","slug":"breaking-the-quant-cast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bjanda.com\/blog\/breaking-the-quant-cast\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking the (Quant) Cast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my main beefs about the online adtech business is how so many people working within it are so narrow in their knowledge and their thinking about advertising. Too many seem to believe that the end point is the technology and the algorithms, and not helping ensure that each ad works as hard as it can.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The former is formulaic; the latter demands some creativity in thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Having said that it was a pleasure to attend the first part of Quantcast\u2019s Supernova event this week and to listen to Peter Field and Les Binet on measuring advertising effect.<\/p>\n<p>For those unfamiliar with the Field\/Binet work their latest instalment draws upon over 1,000 case studies dawn from the IPA\u2019s archives and which cover not just the UK but increasingly other markets too. This they have supplemented with another few hundred cases from Australia, covering the Pacific Rim. They have looked at short-term and long-term effects, using a mass of data.<\/p>\n<p>Amongst their conclusions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Long-term, branding campaigns have a far greater effect on business metrics (like profit) than short-term tactical activity<\/li>\n<li>But \u2013 the sensible marketer does both, spending about 60% on brand, and 40% on tactical<\/li>\n<li>TV is unchallenged as the most effective long-term brand building medium, followed by other traditional media forms radio and out-of-home<\/li>\n<li>But \u2013 online media are great for short-term offers and activation campaigns<\/li>\n<li>Creativity is crucial \u2013 award winning campaigns perform in-market far ahead of non-award-winning campaigns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Kudos to Quantcast for exposing this thinking to a room full of people by far the majority of whom live in the immediate short-term, for whom a 30-day window is rather more common than the 1 \u2013 10 year windows used by Peter and Les.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe a few of them went away prepared to reconsider <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjanda.com\/blog\/what-business-are-we-in\/\">what business they\u2019re in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was also highly pertinent to remind everyone of the importance of creativity \u2013 it was fascinating and highly relevant to hear from a Pixar lead animator.<\/p>\n<p>Consumers, we know from a wide variety of sources enjoy great advertising (look at the public interest in the John Lewis Christmas campaign, used as an example by Field and Binet; or at the anticipation ahead of new blockbusters by Guinness, or Nike).<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand look at the fuss around adblockers, a problem very largely created by the adtech business and its application as opposed to by the wider advertising industry (even if blockers of course affect us all).<\/p>\n<p>As I wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjanda.com\/blog\/traders-0-ideas-1\/\">once<\/a>: Traders 0; Ideas 1.<\/p>\n<p>Creativity is about being different and breaking the conventions.<\/p>\n<p>A million years ago I used to go and see our agency\u2019s clients with the late great Allen Thomas, our Creative Director. The presentation we put together was about breaking the rules.<\/p>\n<p>TV, we would say is all about sound and colour, before showcasing black and white ads.<\/p>\n<p>Radio can\u2019t be used visually, followed by a then-famous series of radio ads for a US paint brand, illustrating different shades of colour using music.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a waste of money advertising industrial equipment in consumer titles, before talking about the Colt Ventiliation double-page spreads in the colour supplements, and so on.<\/p>\n<p>As Dave Trott puts it in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/One-Plus-Equals-Three-Masterclass\/dp\/1447287037\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1445502436&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=dave+trott\">book<\/a> \u2018One Plus One Equals Three: A Masterclass in Creative Thinking\u2019: \u201cThe problem with formulas is they keep us locked in conventional wisdom. We can\u2019t discover anything new as long as we keep to formulas.
