{"id":753,"date":"2016-04-29T09:59:42","date_gmt":"2016-04-29T08:59:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bjanda.com\/blog\/?p=753"},"modified":"2016-04-29T09:59:42","modified_gmt":"2016-04-29T08:59:42","slug":"whats-in-a-name","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bjanda.com\/blog\/whats-in-a-name\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s In a Name"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">On the back of their Procter and Gamble win last year, earlier this month Omnicom Media Group <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/news\/advertising-branding\/omnicom-media-groups-new-network-will-focus-data-driven-marketing-170698\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"> that it is opening a third media agency to sit alongside OMD and PHD. The new network called Hearts and Science is headed by Scott Hagedorn, who was until recently Annalect\u2019s CEO.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">There are a few interesting things to say about this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">First \u2013 the name. This must be one of the first media agencies to pick a name that actually means something. I always thought it would at least be honest if one of the volume-obsessed media agencies were to be called VBM (Very Big Media) even if one or two may be able to think of a better word than \u2018very\u2019.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Tempting though it is to call your new agency after the founders, like PHD, a colour palate (Blue 499) or even after the pub where your plans first saw the light of day (the7stars), there is something to be said for calling your new baby something you want it to aspire to be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">H&amp;S not only means something, it means something meaningful. It suggests that it will be all about mixing the softer, more creative, people bit with the harder, quantitative technology-driven bit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Furthermore it differentiates itself from what the average punter may perceive as the simply monolithic. The very name GroupM suggests size and a degree of uniformity, and even though Mindshare implies an association with the consequences of what it does, MEC, Maxus and MediaCom are at the end of the day just words beginning with \u2018M\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Then there\u2019s the choice of CEO. Hagedorn comes from the data world, having most recently run OMG\u2019s data division, Annalect. In this Omnicom have followed GroupM which is run in North America by Brian Lesser, the ex-CEO of Xaxis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Certainly neither Omnicom nor WPP can be accused of not following their own advice. They\u2019ve put an expertise in data at the heart of their media operations \u2013 no doubt they wish more of their clients would show the same commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Other holding companies have been busy too. Publicis and Aegis have in their own way decided on a degree of change away from the traditional media-only management past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Publicis Groupe Media in London <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.campaignlive.co.uk\/article\/presenting-publicis-media-surprisingly-british-affair\/1392005\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;\">has appointed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"> a non-media agency person, Amanda Morrissey from WPP\u2019s digital agency AKQA to head the UK operation; whilst Carat <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.campaignlive.co.uk\/article\/rick-hirst-joins-carat-ceo\/1393052\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff; font-family: Calibri;\">has hired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"> their sister creative agency McGarrybowen\u2019s boss Rick Hirst as their new UK CEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Publicis has tried to distance itself from the GroupM mini-holding company model by saying the centre won\u2019t contract with any client, although the notion of a \u2018unifying chassis\u2019 on which the individual agencies are built doesn\u2019t sound so different from the tried and tested GroupM formula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">It used to be said that all holding companies were much of a muchness, and their brands largely interchangeable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">That looks set to change. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the back of their Procter and Gamble win last year, earlier this month Omnicom Media Group announced that it is opening a third media agency to sit alongside OMD and PHD.
